The Master’s Degree in Mathematics-Economics

Dear visitor

In connection with the recent University reorganization, the Department changed its name from Department of Mathematical Sciences to Department of Mathematics.

Thus this URL (imf.au.dk) no longer fits our name (it matched the former name in Danish). All our pages and activities will be continued on other sites. Please update your bookmarks.

The University has decided that instead of just a single site per department, each department will now have at least three sites (separated into different audiences). In the future Department of Mathematics can be followed via:

Admission Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in Mathematics-Economics from the University of Aarhus is qualifying for the Master’s degree programme in Mathematics-Economics. Students holding less than a Bachelor’s degree can be qualified: A bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Aarhus containing the elective subjects National Economics and Operational Analysis with a total extent of 60 ECTS is also  qualifying for the Master’s degree programme in Mathematics-Economics.

A Bachelor of Mathematics-Economics from the University of Copenhagen or from the University of Southern Denmark is also qualifying for the Master’s degree programme in Mathematics-Economics. The same applies for qualifications assessed by the university to be equivalent to the above-mentioned educations as to level, content and extent.

Students from the University of Aarhus normally apply for admission through the central online self-service. If  the time-limit has expired you may use a special form or contact the main responsible for the University Studies Office. At present the main responsible is Søren Anker Andersen. Students from other institutions may download an application form. The application must be submitted to the University Studies Office, Fredrik Nielsens Vej 5, 8000 Aarhus C.

In case you are delayed in your Bachelor’s degree programme you can submit an application for exemption for a temporary enrolment in the Master’s degree programme. Further information about the rules in force can be found on the homepages of the university and of the Faculty of Science. For application forms see Hent blanketter.

Structure

The Master’s degree programme is equivalent 120 ECTS and comprises:

  • Study components within the subject area mathematics-economics to an extent of 90 ECTS including a thesis of 30 ECTS.

The exact regulations for the Master’s degree programme in mathematics-economics can be found on the homepage of the Faculty of Science.

Study Programme

When you apply for admission to the Master’s degree programme (also for a temporarily admission) you must draw up a study programme for your Master’s degree together with Søren Glud Johansen who represents the education “mathematics-economics” in the teaching committee of the department. For this purpose you have to use a special form which has to be filled in and submitted to Søren Glud Johansen (office B4.14). The composition of your study programme can be modified  regularly in cooperation with the departmental teaching committee. If the study programme is modified a new form must be filled in.

The study programme must be an entire unit and have a total of 120 ECTS and meet the requirements as follows:

  1. The programme must contain advanced study components within mathematics-economics with a main economic purpose (to an extent) of at least 90 ECTS.
  1. The total extent of study components within mathematics-economics in the programme must together with the study components within mathematics-economics in the qualifying bachelor’s degree be at least 180 ECTS.
  1. The programme must contain a thesis counting 30 ECTS.
  1. The programme must contain study components (to an extent) of at least 60 ECTS within one the 3 specialisations: Financing, Economics or Operational Analysis.
  1. The programme must together with the qualifying Bachelor’s degree programme contain components/items equalling to the compulsory economic courses (60 ECTS), mathematics- and statistics (85 ECTS) as well as courses of computer science (10 ECTS) in the course catalogue.

Every year in May the department announces the courses planned to take place in the coming Autumn (1st and 2nd quarter) and in December courses planned to take place in the coming Spring (3rd and 4th quarter are announced. Suggestions for courses from the students are welcome. The course descriptions are announced on the internet. Furthermore, orientation meetings are held.

Master’s Thesis

The Master’s degree programme is completed by a MA thesis equivalent to 30 ECTS  and the subject area must be within the specialisation of the education. Writing the Master’s thesis the student works independently with an issue, clearly specified and defined.

Normally the MA thesis is equivalent to 30 ECTS. If the MA thesis has an experimental nature, however, the equivalence can be up to 60 ECTS. In this case a special permission from the board of study is required and we do not expect many of this kind.

A main supervisor is appointed by the department, normally according to the student’s proposal. The main supervisor may be a member of the academic staff at the Faculty of Science or at the School of Economics. In particular cases the student may have a project supervisor in addition to the main supervisor. The MA thesis is performed independently by the student but in consultation with the supervisor(s).

An oral examination will be held in connection with the MA thesis when the supervisor and the external examiner have scrutinised the submitted MA thesis. The examination lasts 1 hour and consists of a lecture of 15 minutes duration on the main results of the MA thesis and a discussion of 45 minutes duration of the lecture and the MA thesis. Based on an assessment of the MA thesis report, the lecture and the discussion one overall mark is given according to the Danish 7-point marking scale and the result must be at least 2 in order to pass the exam. An external examiner participates at the examination.

The thesis must have an abstract in English. The title of the thesis must be in Danish and in English.

Apart from the academic substance the student’s formulating and spelling capacity must be weighted as well at the assessment of the thesis

MA Thesis Contract

Before writing the MA thesis a contract is signed by the student and the (main) supervisor. The contract must be drawn up on a special form. Students who have already commenced their MA thesis must sign a MA thesis contract no later than 15 March 2007.

Please, notice that a deadline for handing in the MA thesis is stated in the contract. If necessary, the department may approve a prolongation of up to 3 months of the writing of the MA thesis. For that purpose a new revised MA thesis contract is required.
